So many services such as Tunecore, Reverbnation, and countless others are building a business model off of getting artists music to online retailers such as Amazon and Itunes. If you are an independent artist the last thing you want to do is have a recurring cost for an album which will only sell for a few months. You find yourself in the predicament of making some money from your album sales, only to eventually hand it all back over by paying prices of up to $50 per year. Most independent artists will be lucky to make $500 from their album projects.

Routenote is a service which allows artists to place their music on iTunes completely free with no up front or annual fees. They do take 15% of the artists revenue but only if songs are sold. As an independent musician you can’t beat that deal. You still keep the rights to owning all of your music, and your music can stay on iTunes forever. You don’t have to worry about not getting your royalties if you don’t pay your annual fee to the digital distributor. I currently have an album on iTunes which stopped making money a year after I released it. So the $20 a year was actually costing me more to keep it on iTunes than I was making in revenue. I decided not to pay the annual fee, but because the music is already sent to iTunes it stays up there indefinitely. This means that the few sales I have received on this catalog project haven’t even been coming to me at all. You do not want to be in this position simply to keep 100% of your sales. If you aren’t making more than $10,000 in sales then its actually smarter to give up the 15% in order to not incur any up front and annual fees, trust me on this one.
I have released an LP through this service, and it has brought me a great deal of sales and I haven’t had to pay out a single dime. Not to mention that if you get press or publicity on a major network, your sales will boost. At this time you can simply upgrade your subscription to a paid annual subscription. This will allow you to retain 100% of your royalties. This way if you do see an incredible boost in sales you can pay the measly $30 and keep all of your revenue.
In later articles, I will explain how to increase your sales revenue on itunes by creating specific content. All of the practices I discuss have worked for me. Sign up to the site for more content, you can sign up here
